Yohmor al-Chaqif: Hajja Fawziya

A contribution by Hajja Fawziya, Umm Hussein, preserving part of the village's folk singing memory.

Description from the channel

Hajja Fawziya, Umm Hussein (1931-2012):

A smile never left her lips. She was known in the few places of joy, and presided over evenings of lamentation and condolence once held around the deceased's grave for a week after death. She led the circles of women gathered around the tomb. Her presence was essential to these gatherings, where she improvised responses and mourning laments in her distinctive, moving voice.

When weddings and celebrations were part of village life, before they abandoned us and we abandoned them, she played the leading role in mijana and Amila's dabkeh to the tunes of Abu Maher's mijwiz, with the darbuka always present.

The wheat ears loved her songs at harvest time, and the bitter tobacco nights grew sweet with the echo of her voice in the valleys.

Because she brought love and sincere smiles to so many hearts in times of joy, and peace in times of sorrow, because she etched unforgettable memories across more than one generation and secured a page in the village's history, we publish this contribution as a token of loyalty to her memory.

May God have mercy on Hajja Fawziya and admit her to His spacious paradise. Al-Fatiha for her pure soul.
